Special Note: This article was first published on Triond on 3 August as part of writing for August special bonus series but went missing in September. Due to the value of the article to other Triond users, I am publishing this article on my blog here.

Triond Popular Article Lists

Triond Popular Article Lists were part of an initiative on the part of Triond either to trick or help their users. It is hard to say whether they want to trick or help you. It depends on you writer. For some these help by getting a lot of views which they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get for few days (sometimes for a week). For some it creates noise in their daily views as they know it eventually dies down once their article is taken off this list. It makes it harder to know if our article is going to garner views on its own. One will have to wait for a week or more time depending on its popularity. I find it as trick for many of my articles that have to earn on their own, and a help for articles that I write just to get some satisfaction when a targeted article is seen by other Triond users and gets commented.

Where are these lists?

Some users are very new to Triond that they did not yet notice the existence of these lists. These are at the right side of any of the Triond network sites, a total of 10 articles under heading “Popular Articles”. These may not be present on all sites for ex, authspot.com, socyberty.com etc. does not have them. But many do have – writinghood, weebupon, scienceray, etc. On scienceray these are listed at the bottom of the page.

It is important to know that these are shown on the side/bottom of all pages of a network site of Triond. This means that for a temporary period your article gets lot of visibility if it makes into this list. This visibility is not only to Triond members but also to visitors of the site itself and the dynamic (fast updating) search engines like Google. But I noticed that Google takes some more time to show its effect by which the article is taken off the list.

How do Articles go There?

Popular lists of a site are mostly like the hot content list. Except that in hot content list only one out of each of the network sites is picked-up depending upon its recognizable popularity. The popular list at one site again is built by picking up articles based on their recognizable popularity. Recognizable popularity in the sense that the automated software looks for comments, likes, time since published and the user’s history and assigns weightage to get sort them down. It is not based on plain view count which we would normally expect.

When you want your article to get in the list, just get comments from other friends by commenting on theirs. The no. of comments should be more than that of the last one in the list so if you fail to reach there, remember there is a time effect, you can post additional comments by replying to others’ comments on your article.

How do Popular Lists Help You?

Once your article makes it into the list, you can sit back for a week or work on other things. The list will be noticed by as many people as depending on the popularity of the site. The top one would be most clicked while the last one the least. If the title is very attractive then it would get more views.

It helps to get some views almost constantly everyday till the article is in the list. There is no need for any promotion. I noticed that this gets daily 20 views to 100 views depending on the site or its position in the list. You may earn enough to have a breakfast or coffee from an article in a week’s time. However it does not ensure hot content list. The previous one on hot list must go away and yours must be the only top one in that network site to reach there. It need not be the top one based on the count of comments, but based on the no. comments divided by the time lapsed since publication and reputation to get into these lists weighs more.

How do Popular Lists Trick You?

The system before installing these was really good. Perhaps, Triond copied the technique followed by many online blogs in the recent time. There are now softwares that enable this to be done automatically. But the choice of Triond to install them seems more of a measure to make users feel happy and letting them chase their cents than doing some long term help to them.

These lists trick you into thinking that you are getting some views automatically without doing any promotion. At Bukisa you won’t get the same because they don’t do such lists. But rather Bukisa implements a five article list on the right side (thanks to genius Simon Gelfand) which stays the same forever and if an article is lucky to get such links from few articles it takes off. It may earn only few views a day. But 4 views on Bukisa is equivalent to 10 views on Triond. And they stay for long term.

This is the reason why most folks find it hard to understand how Bukisa works. It is plain simple. You need to take chances and stop looking for immediate views that happens with Triond. Many do agree that these initial views are like noise and they anyway go down and avoid them from knowing the article’s true potential for some time. Once the tide is down, (i.e. the article is taken off the list), it shows its true nature. You might have to promote the article to earn views daily on its own.

That is why it is kind of a trick that makes many users unaware that there is a better way out there than few cents. I deliberately try to avoid getting comments from others by removing portfolio from my profile page when I want to see my articles’ true value and the result of my promotion efforts as soon as I promote them. Otherwise the Triond Noise (we can call it so) can interfere with view counts and gives us wrong results which we might use to estimate how many articles to write to reach some goal. Once failed to estimate correctly, we fail on our goal and regret in the end. At Bukisa it is plain and simple. Your article works or drowns. But even a drowned one can be “picked-up” by promoting it on our own. When I say promoting don’t confuse it with popular bookmarking sites stumbleupon, digg, xomba etc. To explain it needs another article whose link I will place here later.

One may ask, how is it that even articles not in the list get some views where as it is not the same case at other sites or your own blog. This is because Triond network sites are created on a model that has these lists at different levels. There is the front page that lists some articles for unknown reasons. There are category pages on each site which lists latest articles sorted by the published date. For as long as nobody else publishes on the same category or the article stays in the first few pages, it is likely to get some views due to its easy visibility from the top of the site.

Conclusion

Popular lists are for little satisfaction but are a great trick to trap newbies. They make it hard to estimate an article’s true earning potential. Hence ignore them or wait for a week if you get on that list. If your only motto is to get visibility to other Triond users, this is the easiest way than to write plenty of comments on others. So it depends on the targeted audience of your articles.

I write some articles like this one to target Triond users, and wish them to get onto the popular list or get as many views as possible without my promoting, so I can know many have read it. But ultimately I write for money. So many of my articles are avoided to get onto those lists. Or I wait for a week before starting to check their true earning potential. If an article fails to get views, you know what to do. I don’t dump it, but take a lesson not to write such article, if possible.
