Motion capture used in modern movie production

Modern cinema has changed a lot from the decades in the past century. With the visual effects taking a big lot in the overall budget the application/performance of various techniques is critical to the success of the movies.

Motion capture is a technique used to capture literally the movement of a person and use to animate objects or other animated characters in a movie. Basically the motion capture techniques records facial, leg, hand and body movements but not the appearance of the person which is later processed and replaced with the animation character. There are several equipments used for this purpose along with camera.

Even though from the designer’s point of motion capture provides the best choice to go for, the cost associated with its equipment does not allow small budget programs to utilize this technique. That could be the reason why mega budget animation movies use these techniques.

The comment about motion capture systems being too costly is actually starting to become less and les true. One company, PhaseSpace Inc, actually offers a very good 4 camera system for 50,000. Additionally most of the cost comes from time spent in production and post production. A dedicated staff and studio are required to use the equipment, then another staff has to spend hours cleaning up data when markers drop-out or get swapped. Again, PhaseSpace as well as others are negating these issues by use of active markers. It’s some pretty cool stuff so check them out at www.phasespace.com
