Alive! Vegetarian Cuisine serves raw organic, animal-free, vegan cuisine. The restaurant was designed under the consultation of a Feng Shui expert. Its ambiance is serene and sophisticated with a touch of Asian-inspired decor. Enjoy the Sushi with a sunflower seed miso pate, carrots and shiitake mushrooms (raw sake, Shiboritate Namazake Genshu), or a Sunflower Seed burger with avocados. Reservations are recommended, and attire is business casual. Hours of operation are for dinner, Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Monday and Tuesday. No lunch hours available during winter.

Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant serves Chinese and Vietnamese vegetarian cuisine. All its dishes are free of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and MSG. Enjoy Golden Era's House Rice Claypot (tofu, soy "chicken", mushroom, bean thread, onion, and ginger cooked with fragrant rice), or the Tamarind Beef (slices of soy "beef" cooked in sweet tamarind sauce, served with vegetarian "shrimp" chips). Greens Restaurant is located in a converted warehouse at historic Fort Mason, and opened in 1979 under the auspices of the San Francisco Zen Center. It serves creative organic vegetarian cuisine influenced by the cuisines of the Mediterranean, Mexico and the American Southwest. Enjoy for brunch the Savoy Spinach and Rainbow Chard Omelet with leeks, feta, fontina, lemon and rosemary, served with roasted fingerling potatoes, or try for dinner the Red Curry (fall vegetables with coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, galanga, chilies and Thai basil, served with cashew jasmine rice and Thai cabbage slaw). Attire is casual. Hours of operation are for lunch, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Brunch on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cafe Dinner, Sunday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Prix Fixe Dinner on Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Juan Pollo Chicken Restaurant Review

Review of Juan Pollo, a Southern California fast food restaurant specializing in Mexican style flamed broiled chicken.

Juan Pollo is a fast food restaurant chain based in Southern California specializing in rotisserie and broiled chicken Mexican style. Their restaurants are primarily located in San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange County and Coachella. Their flamed broiled chicken are broiled in open flame for three hours.

DECOR: Juan Pollo is a hole on the wall with mis-matched furniture, poorly lighted with no specific decor theme.

FOOD: The restaurants of Juan Pollo may be a hole on the wall but their Mexican style rotisserie chicken is a winner. Don't be fooled by the rough exterior. It is the best tasting chicken I ever had. I had the half chicken which came with tortillas, salsa and ordered a cup rice on the side. The chicken is very juicy, tender with so much flavor and the skin is very crispy. The meat falls off the bones. It is broiled to perfection. The salsa is great (ordered the spicy salsa), the rice is passable.

I had a burrito to go. It is a little bit dry but the salsa made it better.

Besides whole chicken, they also have soft chicken taco, bean and cheese burrito, and chicken salad (it has lettuce, cheese, tomato, shredded chicken, salsa and dressing) . For their sides, chicken tostada, rice (rice, chicken bits, green onion and seasoning), beans, potato salad and corn on the cub.

They do catering and party packs are also available. You can order whole chickens to go with sides included.

STAFF: The staff of their Upland location (along Foothill Blvd) are very friendly and extremely fast.

PRICE: The price is dirt cheap with big portions. Their very affordable lunch and dinner specials comes with chicken, sides and drink.

CLEANLINESS: Their restaurant is generally clean with letter grade of "A" from the state of California. Other than the graffiti, their men's room is clean with soap, paper towels and warm water.

Their rotisserie chicken is highly recommended, you will definitely get hooked. This is the best place for flamed broiled, rotisserie chicken. The chicken is what gives this place all of it's stars, it doesn't have that commercial and mass produced taste.

This one is a little less known than other entries on this list, but Blu Jam café deserves to be recognized as a go-to on more than a neighborhood level. This bohemian diner, which once served as a below-the-radar blues and jazz hangout, offers a small sidewalk setup to accompany its slightly rustic, red-brick-and-exposed-beam interior. The breakfast menu includes genius entries such as the Toscana Scramble, an eggs-and-sausage affair that brings in pesto, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes to party in your mouth, and the chocolate, banana and candied walnut crepe, which would excite any French chocolate fiend. Breakfast is served all day, and your table top will never be wont for fresh bread.

One could talk about the Griddle’s egg creations, its French toast, or even its respectable lunch menu, but one would be missing the point. Because the claim to fame of this Sunset Boulevard eatery is its pancakes, which if held in the air overhead, would create an eclipse of the sun, or at least serve as a reliable umbrella. The wide, thick, ridiculously tasty pancakes served here are big enough to cover your entire plate -- and if that’s not enough pancake, you get three of them. They also cover four entire pages of the menu, with flavors such as pumpkin, apple cobbler, chocolate chip cookie, Baliey’s and Kahlua, and raspberry-lemon. Can you say full?

Southwestern tendencies create an inviting California-style menu, and their Italian coffees are raved about.

Every play on words you could come up with comparing this restaurant to the real thing (i.e., the comfort of your own kitchen) is warranted. As soon as you announce your arrival and start the usual 10-15 minute wait outside the gates of this mostly-outdoor establishment in Los Feliz, you will see the motherly presence of the hostess, who seems to be the owner as well (though a scouring of the Web could not confirm this). The treehouse-like appearance of the entire restaurant creates the feeling of being in one’s own back yard, complete with an above-ground koi-filled fountain to stare at as you devour your food. The eclectic combinations of eggs, potatoes, veggies, sauces and other options on the breakfast menu make this a prime go-to for the locals, and the lunch, dinner and drink menus are none too shabby, either.
